Rome Day 3 the Pantheon
We started today with an errand at the train station – to get actual tickets for our trip tomorrow (no more of this RailEurope eticket stuff). Near the Termini station we stopped by the National Museum of Rome and spent the rest of the morning with the Greek and Roman treasures housed there. A group of American students were sketching the figures in one of the rooms — maybe some of them were even CC students.
We ate near the train station (nothing to rave about) and started for the Colosseum, but got distracted by Sta Maria Maggiore with its goldleaf ceiling and over-the-top statuary.

We went back to the hotel for some respite from Rome traffic. Somewhat refreshed, we started again for the Colosseum and then decided we’d rather walk to the Pantheon. (This was my #1 must-see place on this whole trip.) And it did not disappoint…

Outside in the back, the Pantheon still has a bit if its original marble. Notice the dolphins and sea shell motif.
One more site we visited was Santa Maria sopra Minerva, where this animated elephant guards the piazza.
This elephant carries the weight of one of Rome’s many obelisks.
