Rome Day 5 – Forum and Colosseum

Well, Shirley and I got the dust of the Roman Empire on our shoes today. Our hotel is within walking distance to the Colosseum/Forum site and this time we didn’t get distracted. Of the two, the Forum is more interesting. The area is an open jumble of remains of temples, public buildings, the main avenue (where the Roman army would parade after a large victory). This is where Julius Caesar was assassinated, Marc Antony spoke to his countrymen, where the most sacred temple in the Empire (of the vestal virgins) was located, where Nero built his palace… Even with the crowds and heat, it is worth it.

Shirley creates her own shade against the relentless Roman sun.

Oh yes, we also visited that other big structure in the area. There were hundreds of people just waiting to get in–the wait was horrendous. BUT. We sailed by them by showing our Roma Pass at the gate..

Stormy smiles at the prospect of finding some air conditioning.
